Jefferson Science Fellows Program

Tenured academic scientists and engineers from U.S. institutions of higher learning are eligible for selection to be Jefferson Science Fellows. Each Fellow will spend one year at the U.S. Department of State or the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for an on-site assignment in Washington, D.C. that may also involve extended stays at U.S. foreign embassies and/or missions. All JSF assignments will be designed in consultation with regional and/or functional bureaus within the U.S. Department of State/USAID.  While in general JSF assignments will involve providing up-to-date expertise in the rapidly advancing STE arenas that routinely impact the policy decisions encountered by the U.S. Department of State/USAID, each Fellow will also be expected to become conversant with the functional operation of the U.S. Department of State/USAID. In doing so, the JSF program complements and enhances the existing efforts by both the continuing employees within the U.S. Department of State/USAID and other temporary fellows supported by non-governmental organizations who address STE issues. Following the fellowship year, the Jefferson Science Fellow will return to his/her academic career, but will remain available to the U.S. Department of State/USAID for short-term projects over the following five years.  Click link above for further information.

NOTE:  While there is no limitation on the number of nominations, please email Larisa.Hull@uconn.edu your intention to apply to this program by December 1, 2009.

2009/2010 State of Connecticut Stem Cell Grant Program

Posted: 2009-10-19 00:00:00

In preparation for the 2009/2010 competition of the State of Connecticut Stem Stem Cell grant program, the University has instituted several important changes for the internal grant submission process. These changes have been instituted because of problems that arose in the previous competition. Of particular concern to the State's Stem Cell Advisory Committee was the submission of grant applications with similar themes and titles by different University of Connecticut faculty and groups. This duplication of effort burdens the peer review system, lowers our success rate and is perceived by the Committee as a lapse in our coordination of the program.
In order to avoid duplication and better coordinate the grant submission process, the University (UCSCI_Admin@uchc.edu) will now require a one page letter of intent that includes the title, the principal and co-investigators, research objectives and type of proposal (seed, established investigator, group project, or core)

We also plan to have faculty meetings to discuss the grant application process and to assist with proposals (dates and details will be forthcoming).

The letter of intent will also be reviewed by the ESCRO. Please indicate to the ESCRO whether your project falls within any of the following categories that require extensive ESCRO review and supporting documentation: use of hESC lines not obtained from the Core; implantation of hESC or derivatives into nonhuman embryos or fetuses; derivation of new hESC lines using somatic cell nuclear transfer, parthenogenesis, or any other method that uses human embryos or human embryo-like entities.  Investigators with projects in any of these categories or who have questions about the ESCRO review process should contact the ESCRO office as soon as possible (see http://escro.uconn.edu).

Proposal Submission Due Dates:

October 30, 2009.  One page letters of intent are required and due by 4:00 pm at UCSCI_Admin@uchc.edu. Please note that the provision of the necessary institutional letters of support for a stem cell grant application will be contingent on submission by this deadline.

The letters of intent will also be forwarded to CT Innovations. (Although a letter of intent is not required by CT Innovations, is not binding, and does not enter into the review of a subsequent application, the information that it contains allows CT Innovations staff to estimate the potential review workload and plan the review).

December 4, 2009.  Full proposals in PDF format are due at CT Innovations by 4:30 pm. (stemcellinfo@ctinnovations.com)
